Sometimes this drive is so powerful that the standard ‘give-and-take’ is unsatisfying. They are bound very much to social convention and don’t like to include moral or political controversy. The City Guard is often forgotten because they are so reliable. They are loyal and great producers of quality – which end up allowing others to take for granted what the City Guard gives. They are hurt by being treated as a doormat but are unwilling to toot their own horn about accomplishments. This is due to that it feels somewhat wrong to want a reward for doing work which is a virtue in itself.

The City Guard can be overworked and suffer from self inflicted headaches. They are methodical workers with good memories and analytical abilities. They are great in small groups because of their patience. They make pleasant co-workers and better employees. They tend to feel a bit harried by supervisory roles. They form strong loyalties of a personal nature. This is opposed to institutional loyalty. If someone leaves the company that’s close to this type – they may leave as well. They are perfect as teachers, administrators, clerics and fit right in amongst nursing or medical careers.

The Knight’s City guard is concerned with harmony and traditional behavior. They have a few close friends and are extremely loyal. Don’t confront them, they hate that. Also if the Knight’s City Guard is moody – it could be because they haven’t shared something of importance. Most friends of the City Guard feel ashamed later when finding out why the Guard refused to share the source of their trouble. This ‘Pawn’ is wonderful because they are the diplomat of emotions and needs. They are society’s most constructive and protective member.

Take Which Chess Piece are You Test? at HelloQuizzy

I still have a hard time dealing with this sort of behavour.

I guess she was dressed down for not agreeing to register this squire's name on the spot when said squire had made the name up about 15 years ago. He got the first name from a piece of science fiction fantasy and completely made up the surname.

Makes me want to find out what King knighted the lout and take them both by the ears to said ex-king with words for their inappropriate behaviour.

I certainly wouldn't tolerate that here. I felt bad for the poor herald though. We've posted back and forth a few times and she's a lovely lady, very generous and kind and certainly not deserving of that kind of treatment.

Someone said it correctly that this deals with people playing two different games...one is the we're cool guys expressing ourselves however we want to and the other is we're doing things as close to historically medieval as we can. Those two won't ever mix properly...one will have to bend or agree to live mutually separate.

*I hereby curse them both with wedgies that require two hands to fix!!!*

Vert semy of roses, a wolf rampant argent maintaining a mullet of twelve points Or charged with a roundel gules.
Amber is the submitter's legal given name.

This device does not conflict with the device of Robert Strongbow, Vert, a wolf rampant argent maintaining in its dexter forepaw a sheaf of three arrows Or, barbed and flighted argent, and sustaining in its sinister forepaw in chief a bow fesswise gules, reblazoned elsewhere on this letter. There is a CD for the strewn charges, and another CD for the large sustained charge in chief.

Dafydd ap Sion. Device. Per saltire sable and vert, a winged stag salient, on a chief argent three broadarrows sable.

Elizabeth Shawe. Name.
Nice 16th C English name!

Heylawive von Meißen. Name change from Heylawive von Misen.
Registered as Heylawive von Misen in September 2006, the submitter had originally submitted Heylawive von Meißen. The name was changed because the submitted documentation showed the name as two steps from period practice: one for mixing Old Dutch and High German, and one for a more than 300 year gap between the dates for the given name and the byname. We have reexamined the original documentation and located some new documentation that suggests that the original name, while highly unlikely, is registerable. The given name spelling Heylawive was documented from Kees Nieuwenhuijsen, "Names in the Low Lands before 1150" (http://www.keesn.nl/names), where it is dated to 1100. However, a re-examination of the document shows another occurrance of Heylawive in a patronymic dated to 1120. The earliest example of a spelling supporting Meißen we have been able to locate is Meißin, 1408 (Ernst Eichler, Hans Walther, Städtenamenbuch der DDR p 186). This work gives several dated spellings for this placename:

...das 11.Jh. 1046 Missene, 1064 Misine, das 12. Jh. Misena, Misne, Misna; 1296 erscheint Missen, 1350 Myszne, Mysna, Myszen, 1378 Mizsen, Mißen, 1408 Meißin, 1428 Meissen.

Gustav Hey, Die slavischen Siedelungen im Königreich Sachsenmit Erflärung ihrer Namen, p 266, lists several forms from the Chronicon of Thietmar of Germany including Meissin and Meyssin in 1408. Given this, Heylawive von Meißen is registerable, but it is not authentic. If the submitter is interested in a temporally compatible form of this name, we suggest Helyawive de Missene.

Her old name, Heylawive von Misen, is released.

Joscelin Roget de Cranewell. Name and device. Ermine, on a pale azure a crane rising, maintaining in its claw a stone, and a tower argent.
Blazoned on the LoI as a crane in its vigilance, the crane is rising, not close, and therefore is not in its vigilance.

Katou Tatsuko. Name and device. Purpure, a dragonfly between in base three lotus blossoms in profile argent.
Submitted as Kato Tatsuko, the family name is properly transcribed with a macron over the o. This is typically shown as either Katou or Kat{o-}. When possible, the College of Arms prefers to use transliterations that use Roman characters. We have changed the name to Katou Tatsuko in order to register it.

While the name is registerable, it may not be an authentic Japanese name. Solveig Throndardottir explains:

The basic problem is that Katou is a family name and Tatsuko is a pre-Muromachi name. According to Mass, women prior to at least the middle Kamakura period tended to continue using Uji names in preference to family names. That is, they were late adopters of family names.

Returns:

Brigit Larkin. Device. Quarterly argent and azure, a Saint Brigid's cross throughout counterchanged.
This is a resubmission of a device returned September 2006 for lack of identifiability: the fact that the St. Brigid's cross was throughout, counterchanged, and lacking interior detailing, made it impossible to recognize the charge. This resubmission is the same as the first, but with interior detailing on the cross (showing that it's woven of straw). Unfortunately, that does not address all the issues of the prior return, where it was clearly stated: "Making a cross of Saint Brigid throughout fatally hampers its identifiability; a cross of Saint Brigid throughout is not registerable." This cross is still throughout, and must again be returned.

Eoforwic, Canton of. Badge. Gules, on a tower argent a chevron cotised gules all within a bordure potenty argent.
This badge is returned for non-period style. Precedent states:

[... on a pale azure a salmon haurient embowed contourny in chief a compass star argent ...] It is not period style to have two different tertiary groups on the same underlying charge. The difference in scale between the salmon and the compass star makes the compass star appear to be in a subsidiary charge group to the salmon. There is precedent pertaining to this matter: [citing the return of Esperanza Razzolini d'Asolo, 10/95] [Uma, Shire of, 10/01, R-Drachenwald]

This precedent was upheld in March 2006, in the return of Mathias Kotov.

When on a field, a chevron cotised is considered a primary charge and two secondary charges. It is still two charge groups when placed on another charge. As we have not yet been presented evidence for this practice, the motif is still unregisterable.

If a potenty bordure is resubmitted, please advise the submitters to draw the gules and argent "T"s of the potenty symmetrically; they should be the same size.

I'm stuck here without lunch/break relief today and it's freezing! Everyone from every other part of the office comes up here and says so. It's the only part of the building that's so cold right now. I think it's just a bit peculiar wind direction combined with all the windows. And thank goodness I have a wee heater that keeps me from getting too cold. It's not usually like this here, not even in winter.

I've got to run the holiday BBQ tomorrow. It was just dumped on me as I've cooked for loads of people before and I'm familiar with how they run it. The others that usually run it have put it all together so it's really just herding the volunteers tomorrow and it's a really easy one, just hamburgs and hotdogs and salads. Shouldn't be a big deal. And I'll likely appreciate the time away from this desk after today.

Wow the week is going by slowly.

There's talk on the fencing list today about the choice not to fence someone. The original scenerio brought up was that if you meet someone in the list, you have a 36" blade (standard) and they have a longer blade. If you yield the fight, do you lose. Now the discussion is going in all sorts of directions, as these discussions tend to do.

I believe that, should you choose to yield a fight for any reason other than safety concerns, you patently agree to accept a loss. Safety should be the only reason for difference. It should be the option of every fighter to yield every/any bout. Unless the reason is one pertaining to safety (either the current combatants or future combatants), in which case, everyone is obligated to point out the issue to the combatant as well as the MiC. If the reason for yielding is not a safety concern it should be allowed to remain personal to the yielding fighter unless they wish to discuss it. There are many reasons someone might yield a fight. I've only done it once myself and I believe that I may have said I wasn't feeling well in order to get around NOT explaining the real reason that I was yielding.

My husband, the KRM, feels that it's up to the MiC to decide in any case of yielded bout whether or not the yielder takes a loss. However, I wonder if he's just assuming safety concerns as the reasoning for the choice to yield. Two fighters using different length blades doesn't constitute a safety concern though. It happens fairly frequently and I've not even noticed any disadvantage to the shorter weapon necessarily. There are no "official rules" to cover this issue. In fact, we're finding that there are a LOT of holes in the "official rules" lately. I believe that my DH is planning on scheduling a Kingdom Fencing Moot just as soon as we get settled in to the house.

I have a personal policy NOT to fight anyone who has hit me hard more than 3 times and not acknowledged and/or apologized for it. So far, there are only 2 people on that list. I really hope that it doesn't ever increase. And yes, I do reconsider these 2 people almost every time I fence at an event. Nothing has changed in the past year to change their standing in my list. It only takes one or two other people to tell me they've received hard hits from these people for me to maintain my decision for that day's tournaments.

I hope I'm not butting in on things but I don't want any "rules" to change that might affect the games I play and not be involved in their evolution. That's why I try to attend Kingdom Moots and I keep up on corpora meeting minutes. Even if I don't know all the people, at least I have a fair idea of what's going on.

It was developed at Cornell University by Rick Pederson . He was trying to develop a lower nutrient valued vegetable into a more healthy, helpful vegetable. I like that motivation. Orange cauliflower has an average of 320 micrograms of beta carotene/100 grams. That's approximately 25 times more vitamin A than white cauliflower has. Sounds like a good thing to me.

They're doing some work on carrots too. They've only been exclusively (mostly) orange for about the last 400 years. Carrots used to come in red, yellow and even purple. So they're working on marketing these again. So far, the purple ones have a problem that the colour is water soluable so they fade when cooked and the colour transfers very easily to consumer hands, etc. Think of children...Agh! Also in the works: purple broccoli, red corn and red spinach.

If they're doing it just to be interesting, I suppose it has the value of promoting more people to eat vegetables. If they manage to boost the nutritional value of a vegetable, that's a terrific thing and I'm all for it. I worry about the far reaching affects of these genetic changes though. Will they cause bigger and badder bugs and fungi?
